May Day

Observed on the first Monday of May, May Day is a public holiday exclusively in Queensland—where it is officially known as Labour Day—and the Northern Territory. The holiday honours the historic trade union movement and the achievement of fair working conditions, including the eight-hour working day.

The origin of the May observance in northeastern Australia traces back to the late 19th-century labour movement. A pivotal event occurred on 1 May 1891 during the Queensland shearers' strike, when more than 1,000 striking workers staged a historic march through the town of Barcaldine. This event helped establish early May as a landmark date for workers' rights in Australia.

Queensland formally gazetted the first Monday in May as a public holiday in 1901 under the name Eight Hour Day, officially adopting the title Labour Day in 1912. The Northern Territory similarly designated May Day on the same date. Although Queensland briefly relocated its Labour Day holiday to October between 2013 and 2015, public campaign efforts led to the holiday returning to its traditional May timing in 2016.

In Queensland and the Northern Territory, the long weekend is celebrated with colourful union marches, community rallies, and street parades featuring trade banners in Brisbane, Darwin, and regional centres such as Barcaldine. These parades are frequently accompanied by family fun days, speeches, live music, and picnics organized by local councils and labor groups. For residents not involved in formal events, the public holiday provides an opportunity for short holidays, camping trips, and social gatherings.
